To this end, we produce steel with the most sustainable and efficient production system, in electric arc furnaces that reduce emissions by 9 times compared to production in conventional blast furnaces. In addition, our facilities and processes are adapted to ensure maximum reuse and recovery of our waste and to improve our energy efficiency. In this way, we avoid the annual consumption of 16,700 GWh, which is equivalent to the energy consumption of a city of more than 5 million inhabitants, and we also avoid the consumption of 17 million cubic metres of water, which is equal to the water consumption of a city with a population of 350,000 people.

Celsa aspires to achieve excellence in environmental management. For this reason, in recent years we have been working to implement the most demanding management systems in all our head offices, such as the European EMAS Register (at our Granollers plant) and we also participate in the World Steel Association’s Climate Action Programme.

Environmental Policy

Comply with legal obligations and requirements in the environments in which we operate. Inform and cooperate transparently with the Public Administrations.
Consider the needs and expectations of stakeholders. Sign voluntary commitments and agreements with our local communities in environmental improvement projects and in disseminating and training workers and local residents in environmental matters.
Work with proven, certified environmental management systems adapted to the nature of our activities that ensure care and respect for the environment, encouraging each person in our organisation to act responsibly and respectfully towards the environment.
Apply continuous improvement in all our processes and develop and invest in new technologies that enable us to prevent and minimise atmospheric emissions, waste generation and inefficient use of resources. Consider the product life cycle to determine environmental aspects and impacts.
Promote environmentally responsible behaviour on the part of our suppliers, contractors and subcontractors, their commitment in this respect being a determining factor in their selection.
Promote the recovery, recycling and reuse of our products and working with our customers to raise awareness of the life cycle of steel. Participate in initiatives that promote the use of environmentally responsible products.

Environmental Principles

Use natural resources and energy efficiently and responsibly.
Systematically apply continuous improvement and pollution prevention in process management, including the establishment and periodic review of environmental objectives and targets.
Develop a production system that respects the environment and complies with the legal obligations and voluntary commitments and agreements signed by the Celsa regarding its environmental aspects.
Promote the implementation of the waste hierarchy, in order to favour the following management processes: prevention, minimisation, reuse, recycling, energy recovery, leaving landfill as the remaining management route.
Consider and minimise the impact of environmental aspects from the extraction of raw materials to the end-of-life conditions of both equipment and facilities and manufactured products, through use of the best technologies available and affordable for the company.
Develop the environmental commitment of every individual linked to our business, including managers, employees, contractors, customers and suppliers, making awareness, information and training a fundamental tool.
Communicate openly and transparently about our environmental performance to all stakeholders with the aim of achieving an environmentally sound integration into our surroundings.

Efficient water management

The Group’s most relevant industrial processes are carried out at high temperatures. This implies the need to use water to ensure the cooling of both the facilities and the manufactured product. At Celsa, we are fully committed to the efficient use of this valuable natural resource. Our specific water consumption figures in our plants remain among the best in the sector thanks to our ongoing application of measures to reduce water consumption.

How do we do it?

Using semi-closed cooling circuits that allow the continuous reuse of most of the water used during the process.
Implementing rainwater capture and reuse systems.
Guaranteeing the quality of the reused water.
Setting up completely closed refrigeration systems where the cooling of the circuit water is carried out by dry coolers, making evaporation losses impossible.

New opportunities for waste

For Celsa waste management is an opportunity and a prime example of its commitment to the circular economy. All activities of the Group companies are conducted in accordance with these principles. In this regard, the Group carries out various actions to promote more sustainable and environmentally positive development:

Use of ferrous scrap as a raw material. The process of recycling waste back into a marketable product takes place in the steel plants. This ensures lower energy costs and more sustainable and efficient development.
Celsa products are infinitely recyclable thanks to the properties of steel. This allows all manufactured products to return to the life cycle without overexploiting natural resources.
Recovery and use of waste generated during the iron and steel process. These generated materials are considered co-products due to their high intrinsic value. They are highly adapted to use as a secondary raw material for processes such as road construction or for reuse in the steel making process.
